Free-Motion Quilt Binding & Fix Flaws | Part 7 Landscape Quilting Tutorial | Fiber Art by Zazu

PLEASE NOTE: If it is 7-8-2022 or after, my website no longer exists. Any patterns or PDF printouts mentioned in this video are no longer available. Sorry for any inconvenience. Currently I am still on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZazusStitchArt/
and here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ZazusStitchArt

Follow along as we trim our quilt and then use free motion quilting to create our artistic, turned binding. I also fix a few flaws in my raw-edge applique details in the sky and use fabric paint to touch up my mountains. The series playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaGo_8Zz-f0Z5wDNeUoztoS9tZP1rI_6L

We are still working from the RAW-EDGE APPLIQUE LANDSCAPE PROTOCOL--which is a guideline, rather than a hard and fast rule.
1 - Stitch wide area across bottom (foreground)
2 - Stitch areas of top (sky)
3 - Stitch large center area of interest (mountains)
4 - Stitch remaining areas
5 - Add interest
6 - Wash & finish quilt
7 - Embellish?

I will bind the mini quilt with 2 layers of fabric and post it on the blog within a day or two: http://www.zazusstitchart.com/2016/10/27/mini-landscape-quilting-artistic-binding-part-5/

0:00 Trim wall hanging to size using cutting mat and ruler, checking for square as you go.
3:08 I am not doing the same wavy binding as in the earlier video, but here it is anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpYp7H6s21Y
3:42 I will be fixing two flaws in this video: 1) two small areas of exposed batting; 2) the line of permanent needle holes in the fabric paint.
4:41 Use raw-edge appliqued elements to fix areas of exposed batting. You can match earlier elements. Nail brush and trim since it won't be washed again.
6:06 Audition and choose a binding fabric. You need a big piece of fabric but will only use a few inches (frame-shaped) around the border.
6:46 Cut binding fabric to match piece on mat with rotary cutter or with scissors.
7:12 Pin wrong side of quilt to right side of binding because this is a turned binding.
10:08 Stitch around with 3/8 inch seam allowance and stitch length of 2mm or 12 stitches per inch. I stitch notches every several inches.
10:38 Cut out center of fabric.
11:05 Trim corners and trim notches. Don't go closer than 1/8 inch to seam line. If you do, double stitch. You can trim a lot more than I did for more control over the edge. Turn and push out corners.
12:25 Press with steam.
13:16 This is your last chance to easily change the outside shape of your quilt.
14:00 Relief cuts relax the corners a little.
14:28 After a little paper practice, free-motion quilt your binding. All the layers near the edge are a challenge. Work up to stitching through them.
15:33 I appreciate your support here and on social media.

16:36 Three to five gift project tutorials coming soon...do you have any ideas?
17:13 Next time I am hoping to finish this project. I'll do a hanging sleeve, talk about hanging lath, do a little wonky satin stitching, some beading, and maybe a little paint splattering...

Next time we will add a hanging sleeve and lath, and a few embellishments.
