Artistic satin-stitching can make a big visual impact to an art quilt. Here I talk about how I use the technique and demonstrate it using both a computerized push-button machine, and a mechanical set-up with a turn dial. I talk about choosing beads and keeping embellishment plans realistic. I also position my flowers and leaves and stitch on my flowers with free-motion quilting.
00 Everything we do to our flowers needs to be done 3 times, so make a realistic plan you can finish.
42 I like to start thinking about my bead choices before I get to them. I like the beading to contrast and show from 5 or 6 feet away.
56 I may scatter beads across my sunny side up egg. I use glass beads. Here are a few tips for identifying beads.
45 Two United Methodist Church banners from 2007.
25 Satin stitching the way that I have used it in the past.
22 I use a #20 foot which has a groove to ride over your stitching.
46 Thread tests on a quilt sandwich.
16 I hop around and add 9 to 12 lines on each flower using my computerized machine. I stay off my brick area beyond my previous stitching.
49 A second pass can really neaten things up. beads can help too. I end each one in a point.
57 Close up. I pull up threads. Think through your process to anticipate trouble areas. I use a bobbin doing this satin stitching.
02 Different machines have different controls for stitch width. here are mine. I think you like the one you are used to using.

08 I add more on my flatbed and use up another bobbin. It is more agile.
12 Thinking about attachment and the final placement of flowers and leaves, etc...
20 I HEAT SET the flowers really quick using the manufacturer's instructions. We will do trapunto in the leaves and our holes in the background.
09 Trimming the background to prep for a 1/2-inch binding. Don't make the top too irregular, so it won't flop over. It shouldn't be too square, but it should be pleasing to the eye.
10 I put chalk reminders on my flower petals. It is good to let things rest and plan and visualize.
21 I tack my flower centers with needle and thread in 3 or 4 places for support.
02 Remove any pins from under your petals.
33 I want to go into the corners as much as possible to keep the flower from being too star shaped. You could use a regular foot, but baste first.
23 I go around more than once and overlap a little. My thread is variegated yellow and white. I trim as usual.
58 And there it is. Next time we will work on the leaves.
