An obscure, very sensitive recording by Roger Owens of this short but moving work. Dated from 1862, the E major Ave Maria is not connected with any vocal work, and although the rhythm fits the opening of the text, the ecclesiastical connection remains general. The work unfolds with a five-note introduction which will return at the end, fully harmonized; at bar 41, low notes at the extreme range of the piano imitate distant bells in accordance with Liszt's markings—from bar 86, these tolling bells build to a magnificent fff trionfante climax on three staves before the brief but solemn closing section in which the bells grow ever-distant. This wonderful gem was composed for the piano method of Lebert and Stark.
