Washington Today (2-27-24): Speaker Johnson 'very optimistic' government shutdown can be averted

President Joe Biden urges the top Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate to act quickly to extended federal government funding and avoid a shutdown. He also says the House should bring to a vote a Senate-passed bill to aid Ukraine and Israel.

After the White House Oval Office meeting, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says he is 'very optimistic' a government shutdown will not happen, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) they are 'making good progress' toward that goal.

Speaker Johnson also says that U.S. border security remains critical in all the funding discussions.

Senate Democrats are seeking to pass a federal bill to protect access to in vitro fertilization, in response to the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling that embryos are legally 'children' and IVF providers in Alabama have stopped seeing patients.
