.International Seed Day is celebrated on 26 April every year to promote seed sovereignty, biodiversity conservation, and farmers’ rights. It also recalls concerns over corporate control of seeds, particularly linked to Iraqi Order 81. In 2026, the focus is on local climate-resilient seeds and their role in tackling climate change. Traditional varieties like tangrashal paddy (West Bengal) and toor (red gram) in Maharashtra are highlighted. The day emphasises the role of pastoralists as custodians of biodiversity, helping in seed dispersal across regions.

.Neeraj Chopra has been given the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, effective from April 16, as per The Gazette of India. He made history by winning India’s first Olympic gold in athletics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and followed it with a silver at the 2024 Paris Games. With two Olympic medals, he is now India’s most successful individual Olympian. He joined the Indian Army as a Naib Subedar in 2016 and was promoted to Subedar in 2021 after his Tokyo win.

.The UK Parliament has passed the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, creating a landmark “smoke-free generation” by banning the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. This law, which also restricts vape marketing to children, passed by a wide margin (383 to 67) and is expected to take effect in early 2027, with enforcement measures arriving sooner. The bill restricts vape flavors, packaging, and advertising targeted at children. The policy aims to reduce smoking-related illnesses, which cause approximately 64,000 deaths annually in England.

.The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a new digital reform to report voter turnout in real-time using the ECINET app. ECINET is an integrated mobile application that combines over 40 internal apps used by ECI. Presiding officers can now update voter turnout every two hours directly from polling stations using this app. The new system removes the need for manual data relay through sector or returning officers. It allows automatic and accurate aggregation of constituency-level data. It improves electoral transparency, digital governance, and public trust in the Election Commission of India.

.The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has declared 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF 2026). A workforce shift is occurring as rural men move to non-farm jobs, leading women to increasingly take on agricultural roles. Women’s participation in agriculture has surged by 135% in a decade, now constituting 42% of the agricultural workforce. Two in three working women are engaged in agriculture, though this remains lower than global averages of 57%-63%. In 2023-24, there were 117.6 million women in agriculture: 21.7 million hired, 95.1 million self-employed, and 0.8 million regular workers.
