EU and UK Unleash New Sanctions on Russia Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

LONDON — The European Union and Britain have announced a new set of sanctions against Russia, intensifying their response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. This decision comes just one day after a friendly but unproductive phone call between President Trump and Russian President Putin regarding peace efforts.

The sanctions target Russia's so-called “shadow fleet,” approximately 200 vessels involved in transporting Russian oil globally, marking the 17th round of sanctions the E.U. has imposed since the invasion began in 2022. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need to increase pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire.

The announcement follows Russian drone attacks on Ukraine over the weekend. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that any delay in peace efforts would only strengthen their resolve to support Ukraine and restrict Putin's military capabilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to European allies for their continued support, stressing the importance of American involvement in the peace process, as he believes it could save lives.

In response to the sanctions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared that the Kremlin would not yield to “ultimatums.” Notably, these sanctions were announced without immediate action from the U.S. despite European leaders urging Washington to take similar steps if Putin rejected a ceasefire.

Trump, in his conversation with Putin, chose not to impose new sanctions, indicating a shift from his previous stance on negotiating peace. Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the White House was pursuing a bill that could introduce a significant tariff on Russian oil and gas exports if peace negotiations fail.

As uncertainty surrounds the U.S. role, reports indicate Ukraine plans to present a white paper to the E.U. advocating for more aggressive measures against Russia, including asset seizures and sanctions on oil buyers. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported dozens of injuries from the latest Russian drone strikes in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv, as Moscow released footage of Putin's visit to Kursk, marking his first appearance in the region since its recapture.
