This lecture examines the development of methods of teaching foreign language vocabulary from the XIX to the XXI century and their role in modern language education. Special attention is given to active and passive vocabulary, vocabulary acquisition, memory processes, and the integration of traditional and modern teaching approaches. The lecture explains how vocabulary teaching methods have evolved in response to educational, social, and technological changes.

The lecture discusses major methods of vocabulary teaching, including grammar-translation, lexical-translation, natural, direct, consciously-comparative, consciously-practical, communicative, lexical, behaviorist, and multimedia methods. Students analyze the pedagogical advantages and limitations of each approach and explore their influence on the development of foreign language teaching methodology.

Particular emphasis is placed on modern research methods aimed at improving vocabulary acquisition through communication, interaction, role-play, brainstorming, contextual learning, multimedia technologies, and memory-based strategies. The lecture also highlights the importance of motivation, long-term memory, repetition, and active use of vocabulary in speech practice.

Practical examples demonstrate how teachers can combine analytical, communicative, and multimedia approaches to develop students’ lexical competence, speaking abilities, and intercultural communication skills.
