Concussion Assessment: VOMS
Instagram Reel from August 2nd, 2024!
Sensory Assessment Post-Concussion: VOMS
Do you VOMS? 👀
The VOMS is the Vestibular/Ocular-Motor Screening (VOMS) for Concussion, a great screen for sensory motor integration post concussion.
Sensory issues are common post-concussion. When we hear people identify symptoms such as dizziness, visual disturbances, nausea, headaches, and motion sensitivity, we want to look at the interface of visual and vestibular with the VOMS. It has been used as a tool to identify concussive symptoms and can also be a way to track progress and a reduction in symptoms.
It involves testing baseline symptoms of headache, dizziness, nausea and fogginess and then changes with each of the activities.
And as we were reminded in Brain Bytes last week (and our Positive Spin courses with Jamie and Katherine), optic flow is an important component of all of these activities and a good screen for visual motion hypersensitivity (VMH). And can give you a place to start training!
For example, did you know that saccades actually suppress the optic flow? This can really help someone who has VMH and be a good place to start. And then there is a progression of optic flow when we move from convergence to smooth pursuit and then the most in VOR cancellation.
When you find increased symptoms and sensitivities with these tests, it may be optic flow related and you will know exactly where to start your sensory motor training!
Clinicians, are you using the VOMS in concussion care? Throw a 🧠 down below.
