Great Blue Heron Swallows Squirrel

This poor squirrel was at the wrong place at the wrong time and encountered a hungry heron that swallowed him whole the minute he saw him. Watch how skilled the heron is when it snatches the squirrel from the ground and makes him part of his early breakfast. Squirrels are fast, but for some reason, these squirrels can’t seem to run fast enough to avoid being eaten by herons. Another squirrel bites the dust at the “beak” of a heron. This squirrel thinks he is safe, perched on a branch like that, but when a heron approaches the rodent, he proves to him he was never safe and swallows him whole.

Heron Swallows Birds

This video shows a rare and special sighting of a black-headed heron catching birds at a watering hole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Wildlife enthusiasts sat there for more than an hour and in that time the heron was able to catch three birds. A grey heron has captured a starling and is trying to kill it, but it’s not that easy. It carries the starling closer to the water, as the starling continues to flap its wings. When the heron tries to get a better grip on the small bird, that’s when he takes off and flies away.

After seeing black-headed herons hanging around a few of the waterholes in Kgalagadi, wildlife enthusiasts quickly realized they hunt the small birds that come to the waterholes to quench their thirst. They spent about two hours at the waterhole trying to catch one in the act, but unfortunately had no luck! It was only when they reached another waterhole that they got lucky and watched a heron catch two small birds in quick succession! As there is unlikely to be much aquatic life, it is amazing how the herons have adapted their diet.
