UNIQUE CREATIVE PHILIPPINES MUSIC in HIGHLANDS of DAVAO CITY

IN THE HIGHLANDS OF DAVAO CITY, the Ovu-Manobo tribe are the traditional owners of the foothills of Mount Talomo in a cool place they appropriately call BAGUIO DISTRICT.

And I wasn't sure what to call this musical instrument that they'd created from rum bottles, but it is a Diskarte Xylophone for me!

I love the Lumad tribal culture here in Mindanao, and Davao is known for its 11 tribes. Just one hour out of the city, they occupy this stunning rolling plain beneath some of the Philippines' biggest mountains.

I climbed one of them, 1100m above sea level, 1083 unexpected steps that took the wind out of me. I then planted a lawaan tree, ate bamboo chicken, and explored the Hand of God (as they call it!)

My art skills have a lot to be desired, but there you go!

We end the video with a brief look at silhig (local brooms made from long grass!) making, something the Datu has been doing for over 20 years.

PLEASE NOTE the trail up this mountain is not open for tourism during MECQ, it is only open during M/GCQ. I went there to document it, not for tourism purposes!
