I STAYED IN THE PHILIPPINES BECAUSE OF THIS FAMILY - Preparing to Trek to Tboli Tribal Gem
MARCH 2016: I was 5 weeks into my 4 week trip of the Philippines, and I'd seen an aerial shot of Lake Holon in Tboli, South Cotabato. So I took a bus to Gensan, another bus to Marbel, then a van to Tboli. They dropped us at the tourism office, and there I met David Suanzon, then the supervisor of Lake Holon.
And so the next day we trekked to Lake Holon, really my Philippines highlight, and always a special place for me. But starting that morning, I'd been vomiting. But I was so insistent that I would make it there. When I came back, I probably would have just continued on somewhere else, but David insisted that I stay with his family for a while so I could recover, and so I could see the spectacular Seslong Festival.
And that slowed me down enough that I felt comfortable just hanging out in Davao City for a few months, during which time I met my now wife, and started doing the things that would eventually lead me to become Kumander Daot.
I always remember David and his family, and never forget how they showed that Filipino hospitality to me while I was still just a traveller.
And I come back here now, as I start a new adventure, a new phase of life, back to where it all began.
In this video, I also start the journey up to Lake Holon, a kind of pilgrimage for me, just getting as far as Sitio Kule, the Tboli hunting village and jump-off point for treks to Holon. It is a special place for me.
This is part 1 of a 5-video series, and I'm really excited for it.
