Beta Sheet, Protein Secondary Structure - Medicinal Chemistry 1.6
Beta sheet is another protein secondary structure, other than alpha helix. Beta sheet forms by joining polypeptide strands together via a hydrogen-bonding network, while the side-chains of amino acids are pointing above or below the sheet.
Just like polypeptide chains, beta sheets are directional as well. The two most common patterns are parallel and anti-parallel. For parallel beta sheets, the N-terminus of one strand is adjacent to the N-terminus of the other stand. For anti parallel beta sheet, the peptide segments run in the opposite direction, in which the N-terminus of one strand is adjacent to the C-terminus of the other strand.

I am a computational chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. I created the Mole Man Chem channel to explain some basic medicinal and biochemistry concepts because I believe the best way to relearn a concept is through teaching.
