SCIENCE reveals how bass evolved to miss the Texas rig

Bass mythbust: most anglers agree that you have higher hook up ratios with an unpegged weight.... but WHY?

We've heard all the creative explanations, with no science to back it up: the bass has more leverage to throw a pegged hook (how many fish shake a jig??), or the bait looks like it's chasing the unpegged weight and stirs up the competitive instinct (really?!).

What ACTUALLY happens is that a bass expects its natural prey to be neutrally buoyant and strikes accordingly. A pegged bait, depending on the magnitude of the weight, shifts this expectation, leading to less than optimal strikes (and therefore hooksets). Another score for SCIENCE!
