Hugo Wolf: Italian Serenade
VERMEER QUARTET
Shmuel Ashkenasi, 1st violin
Mathias Tacke, 2nd violin
Richard Young, viola
Marc Johnson, cello
July 12, 1997
Norfolk Festival
How unlikely is it that an Austrian born in Slovenia would so perfectly capture the carefree spirit of Italy! That said, there’s nothing casual about the preparation that’s necessary to SOUND carefree, particularly in a piece as transparent and disarmingly prickly as this. The goal should be to recapture the feeling of the two lighthearted days Mathias, Richard and their wives spent together in Portofino. Not to re-live the stress of being stuck in traffic on the way to a concert in Napoli.
