When Mathias Tacke became the Vermeer’s 2nd violinist in 1992, he brought a unique set of skills. Naturally he was well versed in the standard string quartet repertoire. But because he had been a member of the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt from 1983-1992, he also brought considerable insight and expertise to contemporary works. Some of the composers with whom he had worked closely were Hans Werner Henze, Gyŏrgy Ligeti, Pierre Boulez, Wolfgang Rihm, Luigi Nono, John Cage, Karl Heinz Stockhausen, Frank Zappa, and Gyŏrgy Kurtág. So when the Vermeer added these 12 Microludies to their repertoire, Mathias provided a special window into this emotionally and intellectually stimulating music.
