Co-Workers MOCKED Him for Quitting his JOB to Do MUSIC...Till He Had a #1 Hit! | Professor of Rock

The Compelling story of the Pet Shop Boys masterful 1986 #1 hit, West End Girls. A synth-pop miracle that put this duo on the map and started a career that so far has produced 44 top 40 hits in the UK. West End Girl was released in 1984 but it failed visually everywhere except in Belgium, where it hit #1. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe knew they had a hit but couldn’t get the sound right. This was after Neil had quit his job as an editor and music critic for Smash Hits. His co-workers ridiculed him for leaving, but he had the last laugh when they got New Order producer Stephen Hague to redo the song and it became a global smash. The story of West End Girls is next.

It’s time to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. If you haven’t seen it before, in this show we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career, giving them the momentum to secure long-term success. On previous episodes, we have covered Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis and the News, and American Girl by Tom Petty. Today we are covering one of my favorite duos ever. Pet Shop Boys with their extraordinary synth-pop ditty West End Girls. This song has a very unique and mysterious story because it was released twice… the first time it failed. The second time it became a massive hit. Let’s find out why! Let’s go back to the ORIGINS.

On the fateful day of August 19, 1981, two strangers met in a London area hi-fi shop and struck up a conversation while waiting at the counter. Their names, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. As they talked, they soon realized that they shared a mutual passion for synthesizers and electronic dance music.

What followed was a near instantaneous connection and the duo agreed to start writing music together. Not long after that, they set to work crafting some of the most seriously infectious melodies the 80s or any other decade has ever heard.

Initially, Neil and Chris called themselves West End. But later they latched onto Pet Shop Boys, a name inspired by some friends who worked at a local pet shop... In their minds, the moniker sounded something like an.
