Experiment with your photography you might be surprised

Flying Scotsman Ribblehead Viaduct from start to finish. In this video, I photographed the Flying Scotsman traveling across the Ribblehead Viaduct.

I took 2 cameras along and shot them both simultaneously. One at 24mm in landscape orientation and the other in portrait orientation at 120mm. I've actually photographed the Flying Scotsman going across the viaduct before but the conditions weren't the best so I thought it was worth taking again.

I always encourage people to revisit sites they may have shot previously because it makes you work hard. Sometimes it's a great way of getting the creative juices flowing!

Unfortunately, the wind was blowing right across the viaduct which meant the smoke and steam were obviously going to cover the train carriages. This was ok it just meant I couldn't photograph the train from a more square-on perspective. The angle I shot the train at in my opinion is a very hard hangle to better.

I experimented with a few different shots but I was very surprised by the one that turned out the best! I combined the sky from a 2-minute exposure which was quite good. I also thought the portrait orientation image looked pretty decent as well. The one image that clearly stole the show for me though was just an afterthought I had.

The 24mm wide-angle lens was actually set up at 60mm. This was wide enough to cover the full length of the viaduct and a little more. Before I moved the camera I wondered what the same shot would look like from an even wider perspective. I went a little wider. 400mm to be precise.

I combined the images afterward and for me, this image stole the show!

I'm always advising people to tell the story in their images. I have a saying, especially in wedding photography, "go wide go safe" It's just a way of trying to instill the story aspects to pupils.

I hope you like the video.
