Icelandic Horse - The Historical & Majestic Creature of the island
As their name indicates, these horses are native to iceland. They are famous for their small size and friendly temperament. Although they are native to iceland, they are also found in Europe and America. Germany has the biggest number of icelandic horses outside of iceland. These horses were first introduced to the iceland by the Norse settlers from Norway, who came to the island in the 9th century CE, and that makes them one the oldest horse breeds. Icelandic horses remain as the only breed of horse on the island. Iceland literally does not have any other breed of horse, except this iconic one.
Although technically, they fall in the catagory of pony because of their small size, but while determining the nature, it is not just the size that is brought into account but also the horse’s temperament. So while icelandic horses may be of small size, they are high spirited and have ‘Weight carrying abilities’, which makes them a full-fledged horse, and not a pony.
While other horses have three gaits, icelandic horse has five. They have all the usual gaits of other breeds, and two additional ones; called Tolt and Skeio. In iceland, horses are registered and each horse has its own registration number called ‘kennitala’. It is like a social security number that is distinct for each horse and helps identify them. In iceland, there are even some apps that are developed to help you keep track of your horse.
