ASTAR DVD Player Repair Attempt, Part 2

Originally recorded April 6, 2020.

After taking the machine apart, I had some limited success! I found that the laser sled was kind of "stuck in place", and if I moved the gears that drive it, it would run itself back to the home position and it was able to successfully read a disc--once!

I took the mechanism out and oiled it with the RED CAN, and things definitely operated much smoother. I oiled basically anything that moved. This proves that there is a mechanical problem with the machine, some limit switches are not being hit, is my best guess. Can we chalk this up to old, dried-up grease? Did China put grease on these gears at all?

One thing I did notice, in retrospect, watching this 3 years later, is that I wasn't waiting long enough. The other player I have in the basement TV setup also seems to take an inordinate amount of time to read a DVD, though it reads CDs much faster. I don't know if this is normal behavior or not, at least for a player this old. Newer ones that China have sent, read DVDs much faster. If anyone has any ideas or recommendations, please let me know in the comments.
