It may not have the same recognition as the flagship Mazda CX-9, but the narrower CX-8 works better for many families due to its inner city-friendly dimensions. Powered by an optional 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel, the CX-8 is offered in a large range capped by the posh Asaki LE we have on test, replete with Nappa leather and captain’s chairs.

The CX-8 competes with the CX-9 internally but also with the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander and the Skoda Kodiaq.
