Countries care more about ‘own national interest’ over 'trading with whoever'

JBWere CIO Sally Auld says countries are now starting to care more about their “own national interest” rather than “trading with whoever”.

Ms Auld says Australia is trading with countries that they are also “strategic allies” with.

“The world is fundamentally very different at the moment,” Ms Auld said.

“This is the term ‘geonomics’ which comes into circulation where we start to look at economic policy subject to the geopolitics and strategic alliances.

“You’re not just doing it because you think it’s a great idea to put a factory in a low-cost manufacturing location.

“You are trading with the countries that you know you have a relationship with on some other level.”
