"What Makes America?" The Power of Our Voices, Our Music, Our Presence, Our Stories

The San Francisco Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, in partnership with StoryCorps presented a FREE community event: “What Makes America?” The Power of Our Voices, Our Music, Our Presence, Our Stories.” We invited our sponsors, supporters, partners, families, and friends to join in the conversation and share in the celebration of StoryCorps recordings and The San Francisco Links, Incorporated work in the community.

San Franciscans gathered at the Koret Theatre to listen to excerpts from the many amazing recorded stories as told by San Francisco griots, capturing the rich history and legacy of Jazz in our community and the contributions of African Americans to this cultural art form. The recordings were captured during our SFLinks@SFJazz event (November 2013 - featured artist Jason Moran in concert with Randy Weston and Billy Harper) that promoted Jazz as a healing art form and experience for wellness, and increased awareness about our Health and Wellness work in the community, specifically in Bayview Hunters Point.

We also acknowledged the work that The San Francisco Links, Incorporated is doing in Liberia to support educational opportunities for girls in that country. Student mentors from Skyline College in San Bruno who are part of the Liberia cross-cultural program attended, and other young women who are achieving milestones to help break through the socioeconomic barriers that have historically blocked communities for girls. Educated communities lead to healthy communities.

Entertainment was provided by an amazing jazz group, ‘The Ways and Means Committee ’ composed of local health care professionals. These physicians, dentists, pharmacists and medical technicians have a common love of jazz and believe that music can be a healing force…physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
