It’s time for another episode of our series. Number one in our hearts where we talk about a song that should’ve went to the top spot on the billboard charts. December 4th, 1971. The quintet of Deep Purple and their crew were in Montreux, Switzerland. It was the night before they were to begin the recording session for their new album Machine Head using The Rolling Stones mobile studio that was adjacent to the entertainment complex of the Montreux Casino.

Although there were no major injuries, the blaze destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all of gear for Zappa & the Mothers. Giover, and the rest of the band, got out of the casino safely, and watched the inferno burn from their nearby hotel.
When the fire finally died down, an ominous layer of smoke had covered Lake Geneva, which the casino overlooked.

Deep Purple axeman extraordinaire, Richie Blackmore, invented the legendary riff that is played 10 times as the permeating melody for “Smoke on the Water. Blackmore’s progression is a four-note blues scale melody in G minor- harmonized in parallel fourths. Richie played it with a picking style on a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. Blackmore later claimed that the main power chord riff for “Smoke on the Water" is an interpretation, or inversion, of Symphony No. 5 by the immortal Ludwig van Beethoven.

On the Classic Albums episode about Machine Head, Blackmore claimed that friends of the band were not fans of the "Smoke on the Water" riff, saying they thought it too simplistic.

Blackmore retorted by making comparisons to the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, which has a similar four note arrangement, but it is anything but “simplistic.”Blackmore’s riff and the backing track for “Smoke on the Water” were recorded on the first day of the Machine Head sessions, as a kind of soundcheck for the band.

At that stage, there were no lyrics for the instrumental track. The placeholder name for the wordless track was “Title Number 1.”
Revered DP keyboardist Jon Lord doubled Blackmore's guitar part on a Hammond C3 organ played through a distorted Marshall amp, Lord’s organ track create a tone that was very similar to that of the lead guitar.

Blackmore’s riff, by itself, would not be nearly as impactful if it wasn’t for the pulsating groove created by Roger Glover’s bassline, and Ian Paice’s driving percussion that was layered on top of the guitar track. The brilliance of “Smoke on the Water” is indeed the result of the magnificent virtuosity of all 5 members of Deep Purple- Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, and Paice (pace)
