Woodputer MK1
Sept 2012 Part 2 of 2
Sorry I wasn't too into it when I recorded this, and for how quiet it might be, and for the artifacts, as far as I can tell those were introduced into the file by the camera, thanks Canon (pppppsssssssshhhhhhhh). Edited in OpenShot.

The bit of music you hear is Solar by Noisestorm, check him out if you like @ http://www.youtube.com/user/EoinOBroinMusic/videos . I didn't ask him or anything, it's just what I was listening to recently and liked, so I hope youtubes copyright trolls don't come and eat my audio.

This is about the computer I made this summer.
First off thanks to my grandfather who helped a lot with the case. He recently got 3 blue ribbons at the MN state fair for woodworking so he was better than anyone could ask for to help.
It's a custom computer with a unique hand crafted word case. Designed to be portable yet powerful it uses desktop computer components inside and woodworking finishes on the outside. It closes with toolbox clasps and have everything I need all in one package with no vulnerable IOs or buttons exposed. All parts are replaceable and upgradeable.
Extra funky features include fancy wood buttons for the monitor controls and a front facing MoBoard IO panel and custom aluminum mounting brackets to attach the components to the main wood board via t-nuts and machine screws. Plus enough space and power for a proper desktop discrete GPU.

Specifications:
approximate overall dimensions (including metal feet): 25"(64cm)x8"(20cm)x24"(61cm)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77E-ITX LGA 1155 Intel Z77
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge LGA 1155 77W
CPU cooler: Titan DC-155A915Z/RPW 95mm Z-AXIS, low profile for airflow
Ram: G.SKILL 8GB DDR3 1600
PSU: SeaSonic M12II 520W modular, heavily modded
storage1: OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-60G 2.5" 60GB SATA III, SSD
storage2: SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5", spinner
case cooling: MASSCOOL FD06025S1M3/4 60mm Case Fan, x10 (probably overkill lol)
speakers: Cyber Acoustics CA-2011WB 2.0 Amplified, heavily modified
monitor: ASUS VS229H-P 21.5" 5ms (GTG) HDMI IPS-Panel LED-Backlit LCD, heavily modded
optical: some Samsung DVD RW drive I got out of a broken PC
OS: Linux Mint Debian Edition with MATE Desktop Environment and linux kernel 3.4x

The wood hardware:
T-Nuts: #6-32 x 1/4" from ACE
hinges: Lid-Stay Torsion Hinge Lid Support from Rockler
trunk corners: foot corners and edge corners from Rockler. They ended up being far more work than they should. I had to make fancy wood standoffs for the feet because the center ones were not the same depth as the corner feet ones. Also they didn't come bent correctly so I had to square them myself.
handle: leather handle and unpinned loops from Rockler. Again more attractive and poorly done stuff from Rockler. The flare that holds the handle in was barely wider than the gap on the loops making it likely that when weight is applied it would pop out. Problem was the cost saving they were trying to do by using the same loops for 2 different styles of handles made it unsuitable for my handle style. More bending of metal and some more screws and it's much better.
latches: Classic Oblong Catches from Rockler. Nice except for the one where the essential spring part popped off because of a bad rivet. Clamping and hammering, it's back on and working.
Rockler I tell ya; they have some high quality stuff and some low quality stuff masquerading as high quality stuff... I might have to go talk to them about their QA.

accessories I bought for this:
keyboard: Rosewill RIKB-11002 Slim Keyboard with Low Profile Chiclet Keycap Design, because I wasn't sure how big the storage compartment was going to be but it's worked well so far *thumbs up*
mouse: Rosewill RM-2400L 6 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Laser Mouse, because I wanted a new laser mouse the inland one I have was cheap and worked great so I bought one to match my roswil keyboard and it was so sensitive it was flaky, ended up driving me crazy *thumbs down*

other miscellaneous things used:
2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter, right angle hdmi cable, 1 to 3 US wall jack adapter, surge protector strip, extension cable, various connectors screws bits and bobs from ACE hardware and the dollar store.

Oh and my grandfather had all the wood in his shop to make the whole thing; Thanks Grandpa!
