Henry VIII's RUTHLESS Torturer Who Racked A Woman

During the reign of King Henry VIII, there was a barbaric man who rose to a rather senior position inside of the notorious Tudor King’s court and government who became one of the most barbaric torturers in History. He was a man who brutally tortured a woman, Anne Askew on the rack inside of the Tower of London, but Richard Rich was a man who it was said ‘nobody has ever spoken a good word,’ about. Little is known about his early life, and it’s not for certain known who his parents were, but he was born around the end of the 15th century.

It was said that, ‘The origin of the family of Lord Rich has been matter of some discussion ... The first of the family of whom there is definite information was Richard Rich, a wealthy mercer of London and Sheriff of the City in 1441. The date of his death is given by Burke as 1469, but it would seem that he has been confounded with his son John, who was buried in the Mercer’s chapel in that year. The family remained in the city, and the son of John Rich was probably also a mercer. To him was born sometime between 1480 and 1490 a son whom he named Richard.’

It’s believed that Richard Rich studied law at Cambridge and that he tried to become the Chancellor of the unversity at one point, and he was a friend and acquaintance of Sir Thomas More. Rich began a career in politics and government as a commissioner of the peace in Hertfordshire, and from this position he then climbed into power and he became a member of Parliament in 1529, and was then made what would today be known as the Attorney General.
