According to an article from MarketWatch: “Structuring a relief deal in the Senate to support unemployed people and allow those who are sick to take time off from work will do the most to prevent new cases and keep the economy afloat over the next few months.”

Meanwhile, a recent interview between Alix Gould-Werth, director of family economic security policy at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, and Marketplace host Kai Ryssdal featured some interesting information about the direct impact of more unemployment benefits and the economy.

When asked how more unemployment would result in a stronger economy, Gould-Werth explained: “The bottom line is that when workers can use unemployment benefits to meet their basic needs while they’re out of work, they’re able to take the time they need to find the right job for them rather than taking the first thing that comes along.”

She continued: “This helps workers find jobs that pay more, and it helps employers find workers with the skills that meet their needs. And we call that a good job match.”

Gould-Werth is also trying to dispel the notion that unemployed people aren’t taking the time to find the right job.

She explained: “The entire research literature around unemployment insurance is really characterized by this idea that the longer it’s taking me to find a job, the worse it is. This study is really exciting, because the research team is turning that idea on its head, and it’s challenging this logic. It’s saying, what if taking longer isn’t actually bad? What if it’s good?”

Finally, Senator Ron Wyden, from the great state of Oregon, continues to push forward a proposal to offer millions of struggling Americans some much needed extended enhanced unemployment benefits.

Wyden explained to Yahoo Finance: “We’ve got to get resources into the pockets of people,” said Wyden. “I do think if I had to choose the best way to go, it is the expanded unemployment.”

He also stated: “We've got to once again, bring people together and the Mitch McConnell playbook that he's using right now to attack the bipartisan effort isn't going to do it.”

I hope this will once again on stimulus negotiations containing Federal unemployment benefits for at least the first quarter of 2021.
