Obama, the Tea Party, and the Future of American Politics

Dr. Theda Skocpol, Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University, spoke on "Obama, the Tea Party, and the Future of American Politics" as the Visiting Stover Constitutional Fellow on Thursday evening November 7, 2013 at Waynesburg University in Alumni Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Skocpol received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1979, and has served as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and as Director of the Center for American Political Studies at the institution. Dr. Skocpol served as the President of the Social Science History Association, the President of the American Political Science Association, and was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science in 2007. Skocpol is the co-founder of the Scholars Strategy Network, an organization that encourages public engagement by university-based scholars.

Professor Skocpol's research focuses on U.S. social policy and civic engagement in American democracy, including changes since the 1960s, but is currently working on the transformations of U.S. federal policies in the Obama era. She is the author of many books including Obama and America's Political Future (Harvard University Press, 2012), Social Policy in the United States (Princeton University Press, 1995), and is the co-author of Reaching for a New Deal (Russell Sage Foundation, 2011). Skocpol has also been elected to membership in all three major U.S. interdisciplinary honor societies: the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (elected 1994), the American Philosophical Society (elected 2006), and the National Academy of Sciences (elected 2008).
