The Making of Information Age: Rugby Aerial Tuning Inductor

Rugby Radio Station began sending messages around the world in 1926. These enormous coils were part of the station's original transmitter (GBR), and can be seen in the Information Age gallery http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/informationage

The coils tuned the aerial system to the precise frequency required to enable one-way communication to Britain's empire and the commonwealth. GBR's signals could also be picked up by submarines and in 1966 Rugby became part of Britain's cold war communications network.

The Aerial Tuning Inductor was donated by BT Heritage & Archives.
