REAL ELEPHANTS on Copenhagen's Streets I Fun Copenhagen History, Carlsberg Byen

🇩🇰 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗟 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗛𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗡! 🇩🇰 Things to Do - Fun History - Colourful Buildings - and why Danes are so dang happy!

Come hear the history behind the famous Elefantporten (or Elephant Gate) in Carlsberg Byen, Copenhagen - and find find out why REAL elephants once secretly roamed through them...

This story was incredibly hard to pin down and took a LOT of research, especially because anywhere the photos were posted online, the poster wouldn’t credit the photographer or would simply put an unhelpful caption like, “When real elephants met Elefantporten!” Like - why were they there?? No one explained the story behind the pictures.

I posted to Facebook and Reddit groups - I even wrote to Carlsberg and Copenhagen Zoo - and finally I tracked down enough clues and sources to piece together the full story for you guys here. So I want to say a big, big thank you to everyone in the "Gamle København" group and on Reddit, too - I could not have put together this story without the collective help of everyone and I hope I’m contributing some small part in preserving important Copenhagen history here.

Most of the photos were taken during the 1970s (if you couldn’t tell by the hairstyles!) and Carlsberg personally told me this: “I 1975 ankom hunelefanten Thaia til station Hof. Hun kom fra Zürich Zoo og skulle videre til Københavns Zoo for at besøge deres hanelefant med henblik på at blive drægtig. (jeg tror, det er Thaia, der ses på billedet med dyrepasseren).Turen fra Station Hof til Københavns Zoo gik gennem Elefantporten. Thaia besøgte Københavns Zoo igen i 1979, da hun ikke var blevet drægtig i 1975. Turen forgik igen via Station Hof og Elefantporten.”

English translation: In 1975, a female elephant called Thaia arrived at Station Hof. She came from Zurich Zoo and was on her way to Copenhagen Zoo to visit their male elephant with the intention of mating them. (I think it’s Thaia you can see in the photo with the zookeeper). The walk from Station Hof to Copenhagen Zoo went through the Elephant Gate. Thaia visited Copenhagen Zoo again in 1979, because she didn’t get pregnant in 1975. The trip again went via Station Hof and the Elephant Gate.”

Elephant photos at Carlsberg (from the few sources I COULD find...) seem to be credited mostly by photographer Henning Thempler. Other photographers are not otherwise credited or known - if you know who took some of the photos in this video, please get in touch! I would like to provide credit where it's due. Photos are used for educational purposes in good faith; I don't make money from this channel, my goal is simply to help preserve little known Copenhagen history like this.
