The Dorian #4 Scale

Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers questions from off of his Guitar Blog website...
Q). Over the last 5 years I've bought several jazz guitar books in an effort to take my soloing to the next level. Most have fallen way short. They mainly show how chords and scales are created. The jazz scale I'm most interested in learning is the fourth mode of Harmonic Minor, "Dorian #4." Could you explain this scale and maybe even show a couple of licks as well? Thanks.

A). The Dorian #4 scale is a mode of the Harmonic Minor scale. It is built on the Harmonic Minor's fourth scale degree. Dorian #4 scale has a very interesting sound, offering us plenty of very cool melodic ideas around minor harmony. The sounds of this unique minor scale can be applied where most guitarists wouldn't ever think to place them. In the video I begin by establishing a place in harmony to use the Dorian #4. Then, I demonstrate a small collection of lines from this scale. Enjoy!
