Kabaka Pyramid - Kontraband (2018) | Full Album | Roots & Dub Vault
Roots & Dub Vault — Real music from my personal vault. No shortcuts. No compromise. No AI generated music. Jah Bless! 🇯🇲🔥
Keron Salmon built his name slowly and deliberately. The Bebble Rock collective he came up through — Protoje, Chronixx, the wider reggae revival movement — operated like a genuine creative community rather than a marketing strategy, each artist strengthening the others without any of them losing what made them individual.
By 2018 Kabaka Pyramid had been the most anticipated debut in that world for years. Kontraband was worth the wait.
The name comes from multiple directions at once — contraband as prohibited goods, as smuggled truth, as music that moves through official channels carrying something the system would rather contain. It's a good title for a record that sounds simultaneously like it belongs to a grand Jamaican tradition and like nothing quite like it existed before.
Having Damian and Stephen Marley as executive producers was not a vanity exercise. Their presence shaped the sonic ambition of the record — the productions reaching for a fullness and clarity that pure independent reggae releases rarely achieve, the budget and experience behind them audible in every mix.
But the content was entirely Kabaka Pyramid's own. The consciousness is real. The lyricism, which draws as much from hip hop as from roots tradition, is genuinely impressive — dense, precise, the internal rhymes doing serious work beneath the melodic delivery.
The guest list reads like a who's who of the revival — Chronixx, Protoje, Damian Marley himself on the title track. These weren't features assembled for commercial reasons. They were a community making their collective statement.
The Grammy came later, for The Kalling in 2022. But Kontraband is where everything announced itself.
