High Tone - Acid Dub Nucleik (2002) | Full Album | Roots & Dub Vault

France again.

Specifically Lyon again, which by 2002 had quietly accumulated enough serious dub production talent to constitute a minor geographical anomaly.

Dawa Hifi were building their sound system reputation in the same city at roughly the same moment. High Tone had already released Opus Incertum and demonstrated that something unusual was happening in the region.

Acid Dub Nucleik was the confirmation that the first album had not been a fortunate accident and that whatever was in the Lyon water supply deserved further investigation.

The five members — Antonin Chaplain, Dominique Peter, Fabrice Oresta, Julien Oresta, and Lionel Dumas — had developed a collective approach that treated the Jamaican dub tradition as a foundation rather than a ceiling.

The bass was present and correct, the rhythmic architecture was built with the structural seriousness that serious dub demanded, and then everything else was negotiable.

Breaks arrived from hip-hop. Loops appeared with the hypnotic insistence of electronic music. Samples of voices, electro textures, and occasional oriental melodic fragments surfaced and dissolved through the mix with the casual confidence of a group that had stopped worrying about genre boundaries and was simply using whatever the music required.

The title announced the programme with scientific precision. ADN is the French abbreviation for DNA — deoxyribonucleic acid, the molecular architecture underlying all biological life.

The conceit was not accidental.

High Tone were arguing, implicitly, that dub's structural principles were similarly foundational — the rhythmic and spatial logic that Tubby and Perry had articulated was not a stylistic choice but a kind of genetic code that could express itself through entirely different surface characteristics while remaining fundamentally itself. The acid and the nuclear were the mutations. The dub was the underlying sequence.

Produced under the Black Dub banner and released on Jarring Effects — the Lyon label that had become the home of French dub's most adventurous practitioners — the album arrived with the energy of a group that had found its approach and was running with it at full speed. T

he breaks hit. The bass landed. The oriental textures of "Tanioshi" appeared from nowhere and made complete sense anyway.

Mutations, it turned out, suited the host organism perfectly.
