Big Youth — Everyday Skank (1980) | Full Album | Roots & Dub Vault
Before there was dancehall, before there was hip-hop as the world came to know it, there was the Jamaican deejay tradition — and few figures loom larger in that tradition than Big Youth. Born Manley Buchanan in Kingston in 1949, he emerged in the early 1970s as something genuinely new: a toaster whose delivery was so distinctive, so rhythmically alive, and so charged with meaning that it permanently expanded the possibilities of what a deejay could be.
Where earlier deejays had focused primarily on energising the crowd, Big Youth brought something deeper to the microphone. His toasting was steeped in Rastafarian philosophy, social commentary, and a kind of street-level spiritual urgency that made even his most playful moments feel weighted with significance. He didn't just ride the riddim — he inhabited it, bending his voice around the beat in ways that felt entirely his own, mixing patois, proverbs, and prophecy into something that was equal parts sermon and celebration.
Everyday Skank, released by Trojan Records in 1980 as a best-of compilation, draws from the heart of his most productive period — the years between roughly 1972 and 1976 when he was recording prolifically for labels including Negusa Nagast, his own imprint, and cutting sides over some of the era's most powerful riddims. These were the recordings that established his reputation not just in Jamaica but across the UK's growing reggae community, where Trojan's reach ensured his voice found entirely new audiences.
What strikes you listening now is how modern it still sounds. The rhythmic instinct, the way he plays with space and timing, the sheer personality of the delivery — none of it has dated. Big Youth was doing something that would echo forward through decades of music that came after, much of it made by people who may not even have known his name. That is the mark of a true original.
