Type 3C Diabetes Mellitus or Exocrine Pancreatic Defects “Pancreatogenic” ; Causes, symptoms, Treat

Type 3C Diabetes Mellitus, also known as pancreatogenic diabetes, is a form of diabetes that results from damage to the pancreas, affecting both its endocrine (insulin-producing) and exocrine (digestive enzyme-producing) functions. It is often misdiagnosed as Type 2 diabetes, leading to improper treatment.

Causes of Type 3C Diabetes
Type 3C diabetes can develop due to:

Chronic pancreatitis – Long-term inflammation of the pancreas.

Pancreatic cancer – Tumors affecting pancreatic function.

Cystic fibrosis – A genetic disorder that damages the pancreas.

Hemochromatosis – Excess iron buildup in the pancreas.

Pancreatectomy – Surgical removal of part or all of the pancreas.

Severe pancreatic trauma or infections.

Symptoms
High blood sugar levels (similar to Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes).

Digestive issues due to lack of pancreatic enzymes.

Weight loss and malnutrition.

Frequent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar episodes).

Diagnosis
Blood tests to check glucose levels.

Imaging scans (CT, MRI) to assess pancreatic damage.

Pancreatic enzyme tests to detect exocrine insufficiency.

Genetic or autoimmune markers to rule out Type 1 diabetes.

Treatment
Insulin therapy or oral diabetes medications.

Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) to aid digestion.

Dietary adjustments to manage blood sugar and nutrient absorption.

Regular monitoring to prevent complications.
