Two Facts, One Fiction (Ep. 79) for Apr. 27, 2026

From PEP Radio Studios, it’s time for today’s episode of “Two Facts, One Fiction.” I will read three statements. Two of them are true, but one is not. Do you know which one is false?
Last Friday’s topic was almonds.
1. Nearly 80% of all almonds produced are used with chocolate.
According to the South Florida Reporter, candy makers use 40% of the world’s total almonds in making delicious chocolates. Thus, this statement is false.
2. Almonds are technically seeds, not nuts.
According to multiple sources, almonds are technically seeds, not true botanical nuts, because of their growth structure and how they develop on the almond tree (Prunus dulcis). In plant science, a true nut is a dry fruit with a single seed enclosed in a hard shell that does not open naturally to release the seed. Examples include chestnuts, hazelnuts, and acorns.
Since the outer hull splits open to release the seed, almonds do not meet the strict criteria for a true nut. Instead, they are seeds extracted from the pit of a drupe. This is similar to how peaches and cherries are fruits with seeds, but almonds are the seed itself after the fruit has been shelled. Thus, this statement is true.
3. California produces 80% of the world’s supply of almonds.
According to World Population Review, California is the world's leading almond producer, with its Central Valley offering the ideal Mediterranean climate for almond cultivation, including hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters which are rare in other regions. The state dedicates over 1.3 million acres to almond orchards, producing billions of pounds annually, with the 2025 projections around 2.8 billion pounds. Thus, this statement is true.
Now for today’s topic, which is emeralds.
1. The earliest known emerald mines were in Egypt in 1500 BCE.
2. Bolivia produces more than 50% of all emeralds worldwide.
3. Emerald is made from beryl as is the gemstone aquamarine.
Take our poll on the PEP Radio page to let us know which one you think is false or leave a comment on the video on YouTube. You can always come back tomorrow for the answers, and our next episode of “Two Facts, One Fiction.” Learn something new every day, folks. From PEP Radio Studios, I’m David Moore.
