Tropical Weather Bulletin - May 18, 2022

A tropical cyclone is forming to the east of Vanuatu today, and is likely to cross over the islands as a mid-range tropical storm in the next few days. This storm could deliver around 200-300mm of rainfall on its short track, and is likely to die out before reaching New Caledonia. This system would be a very late forming cyclone for the season.

Elsewhere, an extratropical cyclone remains fairly powerful off the coast of southern Brazil, and is delivering tropical storm force winds to the coastline. This storm is expected to curve around northwards, then eastwards away from land. At this point, it could briefly become a subtropical or tropical cyclone, and possibly reach hurricane status before turning post-tropical near Tristan da Cunha.
