52 years ago Brazil knocked Scotland out of a World Cup on goal difference.

We've followed Scotland all the way through this World Cup — the curse, the Morocco rematch, the ghosts of 1978. On Wednesday in Miami, it came down to Brazil.

Brazil beat Scotland 3-0 — Vinícius Júnior twice, Matheus Cunha once — to win Group C. Scotland finish third. Not eliminated yet, but the heavy defeat gutted their goal difference, and now they wait to see if they survive as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

It is Scotland's ninth World Cup. They have never once escaped the group — no nation in history has been to more and never advanced. Three of those exits came on goal difference: 1978 (Netherlands), 1982 (Soviet Union)… and 1974, when the team that finished above them was Brazil. That summer in West Germany, Scotland drew Brazil 0-0, drew Yugoslavia, beat Zaire — and went home as the only unbeaten team in the tournament, eliminated anyway because Brazil and Yugoslavia had beaten Zaire by more. The first nation ever knocked out of a World Cup without losing a game.

Fifty-two years on, Brazil were the ones running up the score — and the same cruel arithmetic may send Scotland home again. "We'll probably hurt tonight, hurt tomorrow," said John McGinn, "and then just keep our fingers crossed."
