Serena Williams, 44, just took the last Wimbledon singles wild card
#Shorts #Tennis #Wimbledon
Serena and Venus Williams are back on Wimbledon's grass. The All England Club handed them a women's doubles wild card — their first pairing since the 2022 US Open, and a return to a court where they've won the doubles six times and never lost a final.
Then Serena went further. On 21 June she accepted the eighth and final women's singles wild card too — re-entering the singles draw she once owned. Twenty-three Grand Slam singles titles, the Open-era record, seven of them at Wimbledon (the last in 2016). She's 44, with no ranking after nearly four years away — her last singles match was the 2022 US Open — so as an unseeded player she could draw a top seed like Iga Świątek or Aryna Sabalenka as early as round one.
The lawn has kept a place for its greats before. Martina Navratilova won Grand Slam titles across four decades — her last major at 49, the oldest champion in history. "The tennis ball doesn't know how old I am," she said. Serena doesn't need a 24th major. The easy way back was the doubles. She took the hard one too.
