Italy 1938 & the World Cup's rarest feat — can Argentina go back-to-back? | 90'+
#Italy1938 #VittorioPozzo #WorldCup2026
Eighty-eight years ago today, a team did the rarest thing in football — and only one side has managed it since.
19 June 1938. Italy beat Hungary 4–2 in Paris and became the first nation ever to defend the World Cup. In the eighty-eight years since, only Brazil — in 1958 and 1962 — has done the same. No holder has retained it in the sixty-four years since.
It might be the hardest thing left in the game. Win it once and the world changes how it plays you: older legs, heavier expectation, a target no one else has to carry. Even Vittorio Pozzo, the only man ever to coach two World Cup winners, did it inside those same Italy years — and never saw it matched.
Now Argentina come back as champions. Win it again and they join Italy and Brazil on a list of two. And Lionel Scaloni becomes the first since Pozzo to lift it twice.
Six different nations have won the last six World Cups. Eighty-eight years on, someone's finally about to try again.

Repeat champions — only Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962) have won back-to-back World Cups; no reigning champion has retained the title since 1962. Six different nations won the six tournaments from 2002 to 2022.
Vittorio Pozzo — Italy manager in 1934 and 1938; the only coach in history to win two World Cups (FIFA).
Argentina / Scaloni — reigning champions (Qatar 2022); Lionel Scaloni, manager.
