Inverse Scattering 101 (Feat. Fioralba Cakoni)

Inverse scattering is seeing with waves.

Inverse scattering is a central research topic in the mathematics of inverse problems. This video is a gentle introduction to this fascinating topic, aimed at a general audience.

Professors Fioralba Cakoni (Rutgers University) and Samuli Siltanen (University of Helsinki) explain the basics of scattering of waves from obstacles. The guiding example is water waves hitting islands in the ocean.

Then the story turns to inverse scattering, namely to how can one extract information about obstacles from the disturbances of incoming waves?

The location, size and number of islands are encoded into the scattered waves in a complicated way, as shown in the video. Furthermore, a connection between inverse scattering and the traditional wave-navigation methods practiced in the Marshall Islands is established.
