LIGURIA AND WITCHCRAFT
Sandwiched between the mountains and the sea, Liguria is a narrow strip of land often dubbed "the Italian riviera" by international authors and travelers. In the Paleolithic and Neolithic, it was one of the few matriarchal societies in Europe. In the Middle Ages, it grew into a powerful maritime republic. However, the mountain villages of western Liguria, such as Triora, were hardest hit by witch hunts. Legend has it that the last witches summoned earthquakes against those who persecuted them.
