Planet Zoo is a highly customizable and creative business management game all about building and managing your own zoo. You need to build a good looking but functional park while keeping your guests and animals happy, and at the same time try to turn a profit with the help of donation boxes, shops and entry fees.

It’s an extremely hi-fidelity game that looks almost too good to be true. From an up-top perspective it looks impressive enough, but when you zoom in as far as you can go it looks breathtaking, and you can pretty much count the individual hairs on the bison’s back with the level of detail they’ve put in.

As you might have guessed from the name, Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster are very closely related and they look and feel pretty much the same, just in planet zoo instead of building roller-coasters and swinging ships, you spend your time hand crafting animal enclosures and making sure all your animals individual needs are being met.

Just like in Planet Coaster, the biggest selling point in Planet Zoo has to be the amount of customization and detail you can put in to every nook and cranny.

You’re able to get really up close and personal with pretty much every aspect of the game, even as you place the tiniest twig on top of a bunch of logs as the final touch to a grander design.

Some of the animals you can adopt include zebras, penguins, chimps, turtles, snow cats, wolves and bison to name a few, with even more included as additional, though optional paid DLC.

Each type of animal has their own, unique requirements in order to stay happy, healthy and eventually breed, and the animal care is actually quite advanced, but the well designed UI makes it easy to see what your animals are lacking at a glance.

For example, bison like wide open spaces where they can graze and run about like they would in the wild, whereas chimpanzees need plenty of climbing frames to jump about in. Likewise every animal has their own food, shelter and enrichment requirements, and can even get sick and need to see an on-site vet.

The guests are also quite needy, but provided they’ve got access to everything they need they typically take care of themselves.

You can place food and drink stands, with a couple of pre-built designs to choose from, or if you want you can place each building as a simple square box with a shop inside, and then build whatever elaborate creation you feel like around it using individual building parts.

There’s a good amount of structures to play around with such as walls, roofs and creeping plants to decorate it all with, and there’s nothing stopping you from creating huge, intricately detailed buildings with multiple shops and even in-house or underwater exhibits to keep your guests entertained.

On top of all that, if you can’t find what you’re looking for in-game, you’ll probably be able to find it on the Steam workshop which has built in support from the main menu.

For such a good looking game it still does a great job at running smoothly even when the park starts to fill up. I didn’t have any issues keeping it above 60 fps and I didn’t run in to any bugs either.
Personally I would have liked it if they’d included a bit more simple, pre-built stuff to play with, such as hotdogs shops that come in the shape of a hotdog, and drinks stands built into massive pepsi cups like in the classic tycoon games, and maybe even basic enclosures that you can just place if you don’t feel like spending hours intricately crafting each individual detail of your park after a long day.

But with the amount of user-made content available for free on the Steam Workshop, provided you don’t mind going fishing for the design you want, then pretty much anything is possible, and if you’re the creative type that likes to dive in and fiddle with the tiniest details to get your park looking the best that it can, then you’ll almost certainly fall in love with Planet Zoo and we highly recommend it.

I hope you found this review helpful and if you did then consider checking out some of our other game reviews and subscribe to the channel to get our take on some of the other games you might have lurking in your wish list. Thanks for watching, have fun and don’t forget to save.
