Taking place in the humid swamps of the Louisiana Bayou, you and 11 other hunters spawn in at a random point along the edge of one of 3 super sexy and ultra detailed maps, and your goal is to push in to the dozens of small, zombie infected compounds to retrieve clues from a glowing portal in the floor where demons and stuff live.

Once you find 3 clues you’ll be shown the boss location, then all you’ve gotta do go there, poke the boss with something big, heavy and/or explosive, banish him and then head to an extract point to claim your rewards. It’s a super easy game and there’s really nothing else that could possibly go wrong to potentially throw a spanner in the works.

Well except for the fact that LITERALLY EVERYTHING WANTS TO KILL YOU, INCLUDING OTHER HUNTERS AND THERE’S NO WAY YOU’RE MAKING IT OUT ALIVE JUST RUN! RUN WHILE YOU CAN! … The weapons look cool though.

Alright so I MIGHT have made all that sound just a tad bit easier than it actually is in reality, but trust me, the essence of Hunt lies in the struggle and hardships you’ll face trying to get through a match in one piece either by yourself or with your team of up to 3. All of your most epic and tense experiences arise from moments when you thought all was lost but you managed to out-fight or out-wit your opponents and make it out alive with the bounty.

In many ways it’s a lot like other extraction shooters, except instead of being a big fat steaming pile of garbage, Hunt offers a brutally punishing but extremely rewarding gameplay loop that gives you an endgame high more powerful than anything else like it, all wrapped up in a sleek, late 1800’s, zombie infested cowboy aesthetic that just never gets old to look at even after a thousand hours in the game.

Also there’s like a bazillion different guns to play around with, each with their own unique feel and handling characteristics… I’m talking bolt action rifles, single action revolvers, early semi-automatic pistols, shotguns, you name it! Hell there’s even a huge bomb lance made from makeshift parts that fires devastatingly powerful, if not highly inaccurate explosive bolts that can kill enemy players in a single hit, both at range, or by giving them a good solid whack around the face with it, and you’re free to build your character around any combination of guns and equipment as you like, provided you’ve either unlocked them or just straight up nicked the stuff you want off dead hunters.

So basically the same as walking through a typical town centre in Britain on a Friday night.

Oh by the way, anything you pick up during a match is yours to keep, but once your hunter dies they’re dead for good, gone, kaput, never to be seen again until you buy another one using the in-game money you earn during matches, so don’t get too attached to them. It’s fine though since they level up quickly, taking like 4 or 5 successful matches to reach max level 50, and with exception to any traits they had when they died, you’re just as effective on a brand new, free hunter as you are on a level 50 reptilian skinned badass. Besides once you reach bloodline level 100 you can choose to prestige anyway which deletes all your existing hunters and resets your in-game balance to 4000 hunt dollars, while putting you right back at level 1 with a basic selection of starter weapons to boot. BUT you do get some cool skins or an XP boost for prestiging so I think it’s worth doing.
