Update 14.5 is Actually Really Good | Hell Let Loose

I never thought I’d say this but the British weapons have gone from being my least favourite to absolutely top of the pile over night with the release of update 14.5, especially the new Lee Enfield SMLE rifle that replaced the old 1914 variant. I got 3 kills in my first 3 shots with the SMLE after never having used it before, I never played any of the playtests or anything, there’s just something about it I just click with and I’m a little bit in love with it.

The sounds, the ADS view, the accuracy and just the general feel of the thing just feels absolutely top notch and for the first time since the British were introduced I actually can’t wait to play on El Alamein and Driel as the Brits, especially on the new dusk and night variants of them.

The Bren gun finally got its new bipod as well though I’ve never really been fond of the Bren in any game cos of the huge upward facing magazine that blocks a big chunk of your line of sight, but the bipod at least gave it some much needed stability when firing in full auto. Personally though I still prefer the Lewis gun both for both deployed and hip fire work cos I think it’s just an all round better weapon.

The new British Thompson M1928A1 is pretty good as well, I think it sounds a bit different to the regular Thompson and you can visibly see the slimmer barrel and big bulky drum magazine but overall it feels like a regular Thompson which is fine, and the new Churchill mark 3 has been added as a British heavy tank, while the German Panther has been removed from El Alamein for improved historical accuracy, though in the match I played last night the Germans didn’t seem all too bothered as their Tiger I’s were doing a pretty good job at decimating our infantry, and at one point even a brave but misguided little Cromwell who died trying to be a hero, trying to go toe to toe with a Tiger head on from pretty long range.

I haven’t actually had a chance to try out the Churchill in combat but if it’s anything like a real Churchill it’ll be big and cumbersome with a ton of armour and an underpowered gun, but despite all that it’s easily one of the sexiest tanks of the war and I think since the model’s already in the game they should even give it to the Soviets with a different skin since they used them as well, though I have no idea exactly when and where they used them so maybe that just wouldn’t work with the eastern front maps we have at the moment.

The new dusk version of El Alamein and Driel at night adds a new layer of depth as well even though El Alamein is still a bit of a meat grinder just because of its overall design being so open, but it feels great to at least be running around in proper camo that actually fits the environment. There’s only one variant of the desert camo’s on the new British and German sub-factions but it’s still way better than how it was before where the germans were grey and the british were brown and everyone was super visible.

Overall patch 14.5 wasn’t a large update but for me it’s had a massive impact on the game and it’s completely fixed everything that I hated about the British. All we need now are a few more North Africa maps and I’ll be a very happy bunny.
