(8 Dec 1987) President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev, in a landmark moment in postwar history, signed a treaty banning intermediate-range nuclear missiles and began talks to reduce the number of more threatening long-range strategic weapons. Reagan and Gorbachev, leaders of the world's foremost capitalist and communist societies, sat side by side to sign the agreement under the Bohemian cut-glass chandeliers of the East Room.
