Woodturning: Turning A Travel Mug-The Cherry Burl Revisited With a Removable Insert and Epoxy Finish
I had a commission for another cherry burl travel mug, but wanted to see if I could make it so the stainless steel insert/liner could be removed rather than epoxied into the wooden casing. After a couple of initial fails using rare earth magnets (hey guess what - stainless steel is not magnetic!!!) I came up with a way to hold the insert securely, but also allow it to be removed for cleaning, etc.
I’m using the WoodRiver brand travel mug turning kit from Woodcraft, and they are single-wall inserts rather than the double-wall vacuum sealed tumblers like a thermos or a Yeti. Being only single-wall, there will be condensation forming on the liner that will collect inside the wood mug and I think it will get funky after a while. Being able to take the steel insert out will make it easier to clean that, and will also allow the inside of the wood mug to be dried out and cleaned if necessary. I sealed the inside of the wood mug with a coat of shellac and then a thin coat of Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast to make it waterproof, and I used the same resin as the finish coat on the outside of the mug for durability.
I applied the resin finish coat using a tumber turner I made with a BBQ rotisserie motor and some basic PVC plumbing parts, using a multitude of YouTube videos from Epoxy Tumbler Makers as a guide. This mug fit on the cast iron hub compression donut and worked out really well, so now I have the option to use the BBQ rotisserie motor attached to my lathe or attached to the “tumbler wands” off the lathe.
