What Is Old Growth Wood?
I recently came across a prime example of old growth wood used as a timber in a barn I was restoring. I estimate it is 275 years old, and I just had to share with you what makes it so special compared to modern wood. Old growth wood grew naturally in dense forests, which made the growth slow and the wood stable. Modern wood comes from trees grown in managed forests and, as you'll see in the video, it makes for a much less desirable product. Woodworkers and carpenters prize the quality of old growth wood, but it isn't really available anymore.
