Cyclone Mal and other tropical developments - November 14, 2023

Cyclone Mal kicks off another active period in the tropical regions of the globe, as the storm heads for Fiji. Already close to hurricane strength, the storm is expected to swipe the western region with tropical storm force winds and locally heavy rainfall amounting to maximums of 100 mm.

In the Atlantic, an area of interest is becoming better organised in the southern Caribbean, and chances continue to increase for a short lived tropical storm to race off towards the northeast. The potential storm could hit Jamaica and Haiti, producing large amounts of rainfall.

In the Western Pacific, the JTWC declared Tropical Depression 17W earlier in the day, although no center of circulation has been noted. The system is likely to reach the Philippines later this week but remain weak, and its influence could stall over the region for many days producing very high amounts of rainfall and flooding issues.

Behind it, another area of interest is starting to pop up near the Marshall Islands, and could become a substantial tropical storm or typhoon later in the week as it heads towards Guam and the Philippine Sea.

An area of interest is becoming more likely to form in the Bay of Bengal this week, and could strike West Bengal and Bangladesh as a tropical cyclone with gale force winds and heavy rainfall of up to 450mm.
