Malham pt 2: Mastiles Lane, Janet's Foss and Gordale Scar

At the turn of the road down to Malham from the tarn - straight ahead is Mastiles Lane. It crosses Gordale Beck to a Roman marching camp (theywer placed one day's walk between) it then continues to Kilnsey on Wharfedale, five miles away.

Dropping down to the edge of the village we take the single track road to Gordale Scar. Here meltwater from an ice sheet estimated to be 500ft thick carved a channel down through a weak fissure in the limestone - creating a ravine with 150ft high walls.

A walk takes you up the side ofthe waterfall - but not in ful spate. The water over here is Gordale Beck and continues south over Janet's Foss and joins the river Aire south of Malham village.
