Meet the World’s Smallest Bird Cuba’s Bee hummingbird! 🐦

The bee hummingbird (*Mellisuga helenae*), endemic to Cuba, holds the title of the world's smallest bird. Often mistaken for a large insect, it weighs less than a penny and measures about five centimeters. 🐝 Its high-speed metabolism requires it to visit up to 1,500 flowers a day, where it performs vital pollination. During flight, its wings beat approximately 80 times per second, increasing to 200 beats during mating displays.

In addition to its size, the bird is known for its iridescent plumage, with males sporting a fiery red-pink head and throat during the breeding season. Its nests are equally miniature, constructed of spider webs and lichen to reach a diameter of only about 2.5 cm—approximately the size of a ping-pong ball or a large grape. 🍇 Females typically lay only two eggs, each no larger than a coffee bean.
